The Shape of Time and Space?

After watching episode 409, "The Shape of Things to Come" it appears that Ben can travel to different spots on the planet from his secret room in New Othertown.

How can this be? We know that the physics of the island allow for discrepancies in time. We see Desmond's consciousness being transported through time due to the purple light. Could Ben's apparent transportation use the powers of the island to travel through space as well as time.

If so, where does Ben travel in episode 409? We see him going into the room and into a rock door. Is he actually traveling to meet with Sayid in Iraq in 2005, or is this another time in our storyline that Ben travels. How does getting Sayid to become a killer in 2005 help Ben awake the Smoke Monster to rescue them on the Island in 2004?

Incidentally, did you notice that Ben's "door to the world" was behind his closet? Aside from the fact that it is a good hiding spot for such a door, I am willing to bet our writers are using yet another C.S. Lewis reference by placing the door behind a “wardrobe.”

Okay I'll admit, I had to read over this post and give it a lot of thought before I figured out what you meant.

I never considered a time-traveling Ben. I thought he ran into a room with a "Smokey control panel" or maybe he has a red phone like the President for authorizing WMDs!

If your right about the time travel element, this will more easily explain a Dharma Polar Bear in Tunisia. I feel like Faraday will play a significant part in explaining this to us, but probably not into much detail until next season. I'm very interested in what this may mean.

Good catch on another C.S. Lewis homage.

I'm always intrigued by episode titles because they usually imply a duality in meaning between on and off-island events.

"The Shape of Things to Come" is an interesting title. I think this implies a game existing between Ben and Widmore. Much like the game Locke, Hurley, and Sawyer play (the Australia reference is clutch!), Ben and Widmore seem to be opponents playing against one another in a very long and involved game. I think this sets the stage for the next final seasons as we see how these two men go head-to-head to get the things they want most!
