Is Ben dead?

My first thought when Young Ben was shot at the end of last episode was, he can't be. The producers of Lost spoke in the past about "paradox free time travel" This idea basically states, interfering with the past will not change or modify the future. The universe has a way of "course correcting itself."

However, check out this excerpt from the most recent
Official Lost Podcast with producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse.

Are the producers just messing with us, or do you think some alternate future awaits the Losties? There certainly were clues in the episode where Sun and Lapidus visit the old Dharma village that the future may be different. Your thoughts?

Joel - the link to the podcast wasn't working. I haven't listened to it yet, but hopefully will soon.

I think that by really analyzing how the writers phrase things, it can be implied that interfering with the past with not CHANGE the future (meaning the BIG PICTURE) but that it will modifying details that ultimately reach the end-game.

Consider Charlie, who was meant to die: No matter how many times Desmond interferes, Charlie ultimately died, but the future was modified in that it was Charlie who took on the suicide Looking Glass Station mission, instead of some other islander. When I consider course-correction, I don't look at people being the issue. Instead its the major events that remain steadfast. Our characters act like chess pieces, and you don't need the biggest pieces to create checkmate. You just need to alter your strategy.

I suggest a few theories: First, Ben is not dead, and as examples have shown again and again, you can survive much worse on the island - but being shot changes Ben to becoming something even more terrible.

Of course, if Ben dies, then what? What if baby Ethan grows up to takes his place and wipes out Dharma? (Please realize that theory is impossible for me to support with rational explanation; therefore, I will refrain from any attempts try). My theory is that if, indeed, Sun and beardless Frank are in the future, that it WILL be altered, but ultimately everything that was ment to happen, still happened...
