316

What a well played out episode. I'm still moving my brain around how elaborate the who set up to get back became. Didn't it feel almost too easy? After all that struggle Ben had, suddenly everyone is there and willing. Not long ago, Hurley was in jail - Kate seemed to have no plan to ever return, and Ben got himself jacked up by someone. How did it all suddenly pull together (in less than 36 hours, mind you)?

I'm sure you probably noticed the John 3:16 theme, which as any good christian (or basketball fan) knows is all about sacrifice and putting yourself in someone else's place. Isn't that exactly what we witnessed in this episode? For example, the obvious of course is that Jack had to give up something of his father's to give to Locke. Hurley's caring around a guitar. Who does that remind you of? Sayid is escorted by a US marshall. Who does that remind you of? It seemed like each of the Oceanic 6 needed to make a connection to the original plan trip. Where there any other connections made?

In unrelated news, I hope that in the time-travel, Frank Lapidus will completely grow back his goatee and find a Hawaiian shirt...

Crystal heard some other connections (courtesy of "The Lost Podcast with Jay and Jack") from this flight to the original crash.

1) Sun sat looking at Jin's wedding ring, just like Rose was looking at Bernard's ring in the original crash

2) What if Kate is pregnant from her romp the night before with Dr. Shephard... just like Claire was pregnant (let's all hope not to Jack, that would be weird).

3) Hurley was reading comic books both times

Btw - Yes, they made it WAY too easy. 5 weeks of build-up where they made us think that most of the Oceanic 6 would have to be drug onto the plane screaming... then BOOM. Everyone's sitting on the plane like it's a picnic.

Best quote of the night though... Jack asks Ben how he can read at a time like this, and he says "My mother taught me". Remember back, Ben's mother died giving birth to him. The guy CANNOT stop lying!!!

An additional connection to the original flight...Ben rushed on the plane just before the doors closed. Hurley had a similar entrance in the first flight.

Just a theory, does Kate look kind of strung out on something this episode? It could simply be the trauma from loosing Aaron, but the dark glasses and bloodshot eyes remind me of a certain drug addicted passenger from the last flight.

Good call on the mother comment, that was a great moment along with:

"We aren't going to Guam, are we?"
-The Cleanly Shaven Frank Lapedis

Another connection:
Jack was reading a letter just as Sawyer was reading a letter on the plane.

I take back the Kate drug addition idea. It is Jack who could still be considered to be on drugs. In Ep. 1 part 2 Ben throws away Jack's pills a little over 72 hours before the Ajera flight.

Brent - welcome to the blog! Great comments (Joel, yours are okay too, I guess...)

After I posted this, I thought about a lot of those same things - especially kate potentially being pregnant. The drama that surrounds that girl...just yuck!

Joel -the sawyer note was a good catch!
