Ji Yeon - Pat

Hi Fellow Lost Fans,

The Other Woman - My new big question after viewing again is this: We know Charles Widmore knows about the island and that he wants to exploit it for what it is. What didn’t quite make sense to me is HOW he knows about the island – such a mystery. This occurred to me while Daniel was trying to make the poison gas inert at the Tempest station. We know this was a benign act to safe-guard themselves (as well as the islanders) but how did they know about it? Disarming the gas was one of their first priorities – case in point – the gas masks/suits. How did they know that threat existed? Has Widmore systematically tracked down Others to get information? If so, what other contingencies are planned for?
That was my only new thought there…Now on to “Ji Yeon”

First off – did you catch what was on TV right before Sun turned it off? That’s right. Razzle, Dazzle! If only Sun had waited a few more moments, she, too, would have learned that Billy D (Lando) was the Cobra!

Second (a few random thoughts)– how great was Jin and Bernard’s heart-to-heart while fishing? And then Regina throwing herself off the freighter? I think its safe to say two things: 1) that Regina is the same one from Naomi’s bracelet inscription and 2) Naomi liked the ladies…I’d be interested in learning what book Regina was reading (or trying to read) as it will probably tie into some theme of love-lost. The literary connections have been super-charged this season and I think its great!

So the writers are pretty clever, huh? First they draw us in with our beloved flashbacks. Then they spice things up with Flashforwards – genius! Now they’ve done what I could never consider – combining the two! I was so clueless to this until the last moment! I got to a point where I was angry with Jin for missing his own daughter’s birth due to work. Seemed like a step backwards for him – especially since he made a great revelation about himself in this episode about the way he was. How sad to know he won’t stay with us. Since the previous hint someone will die next week, all I can say is they’d better not throw us a cheap shot of killing Jin next week since we’re anticipating it to happen. Now here’s the question: Sun visits his grave – does that mean he actually did make it off or die in transit? Or was the grave only a symbolic marker for her with no body buried beneath? My initial theory of Sun and Jin being the part of the Six may still hold water…but not much.

The Grave: If you rewatch and freeze-frame, the grave has three sets of dates on it. 3-20-1980, 11-27-1974, and 9-22-2004. The November is probably Jin birth year. The September is the same day of the Oceanic crash. What is the 1980 date?

So with that being said – do we know our Six yet? Jack, Hurley, Kate, Sun, Sayid. My counting gives me only 5. Do you count Aaron? I don’t. *in baby-talk voice* “That widdle guy wasn’t on the manifest. Were you? Were you?” Okay, enough of that. Maybe Claire does make it off – I still think Desmond’s flashes should come to fruition, but how that would work with our current plot lines – no clue – probably wouldn’t. So who then? Guesses?

On the Freighter – The note…the tapping on the pipes? Kevin Johnson? No – its just Mikey. My guess the pipe work was some Morse code message or him sabotaging yet another piece of equipment. I think Michael is acting under the orders of Ben to create every plausible disaster aboard that ship to get them out of there – because once they leave they’ll lose all that effort finding a place they may never find again…The Captain – so that was a pretty cool bit about the Black Box. However, I don’t think it would be fair to say it was Ben that. Maybe he did – but it was JUST his doing. Remember, Oceanic is just as much tied into this cover up! Besides, Michael (as we assume it was his note) stated “Don’t trust the captain.” Ultimately I think every action the freighties make is to undermine Ben’s credibility so that everyone gives him over to them.

As a very random side assignment, see if you can find these actors in the following movies: Freighter Doctor – Spiderman 3
Keamy (tank-top freighter dude) – 3:10 to Yuma
Paulo (yeah, remember Paulo Lies?) – 300

Ps. No IMDB – that would be cheating…

Okay, that’s quite enough now from me. Lengthy as it is, give me some thoughts…

Just wanted to take some time to respond to "Ji Yeon" before "Meet Kevin Johnson" airs tomorrow.

First off, I agree, I really enjoyed the twist with the flash forward AND flash back. What a great idea. Like you Pat, I was totally thrown off at first, but for some reason when Hurley showed up at the door with the tie, it all hit me.

By the way, great catch on the "Razzle-Dazzle-Nicki" of Nicki and Paulo fame. I had to re-watch just to see that.

As far as the Oceanic Six, I have a feeling we have seen all of them now. So how do we determine which ones are the six? Here is my view: how can you not count Aaron if he did, in fact, come home with with the other five? I know there's that manifest idea, but Aaron was ON the plane, just not born yet. Who knows? I would also like to see Claire getting off the island to allow Charlie's death to not be in vain. I mean, how many of Desmond's flashes have turned out to be wrong...none so far. I wouldn't want to start his losing streak with this one.

I have a theory about Jin. I know it's the optimist side of me thinking this but, I think Jin may still be alive. Although it would be strange that Sun was talking to his grave if he were still alive, I re-watched the end of the episode and have this strange feeling the writers are trying to trick us again. As you noted, the date of death is the date of the crash...possibly an attempt to misguide someone? Additionally, she never indicates that he is dead, but just that she "misses him." She would have no other way to communicate with him if he were still on the island, so she may do so at the grave. Just a thought.

As far as the 1980 on the gravestone. One of my ideas is that it is a date of an important milestone traditionally noted on gravestones in Korea. Kim (my wife) thinks that it may be the date of Sun's birth as she will someday be buried with him. I guess we're going to have to brush up on our Korean to find out the true answer.

One last note on Jin. I've started to notice a cell phone clue in Lost. Remember Jack's sleek new Razor phone in "Behind the Looking Glass" (season 3 finale)? Definitely not a phone that predates 2004. Now check out Jin's phone in "Ji Yeon." It is slightly smaller than Zack Morris's phone from the 90's. I'm not sure if this is on purpose, but I do know that from now on I will be paying very close attention to cell phones for clues.

Finally, the freighter. I am very interested in this captain. It goes back to this theme, who to trust? It appears at this point we are kind of torn between Ben Linus and Charles Witmore. Who are you going with? If I'm a Lostie, I'm hoping hitch a ride home from someone not connected to either one of these guys, 'cause I don't trust either party. Will we get to hear the recording from that black box? I sure hope so. And what about Walt? Is he A.) with Michael...I'm sorry Kevin on the ship. B.) On the island...or was that just a "giant-ghost-Walt" (to quote Sawyer from Episode 401) that spoke to Lock? C. At home in LA playing backgammon with his buddies.

That's all I have in me for now. Thanks for reading. I look forward to this week's episode, the last we'll get for a while.

Enjoy!

Joel

I need to pay more attention to the stuff in the scenes. Didn't see the TV show that Sun was watching. Could Charles Whitmore be one of the people in charge of the Dharma? And be after Ben because he killed them all. Could the people on the plane be the Dharma people that Ben killed, although they showed the people in the pit when Ben shot Locke?

I agree great idea about flash-forward and flashback in the same episode. I didn't figure it out. I had to watch it this weekend so I was clued in before I watched it.

Ok remember in Jack's 1st flash-forward that he went to a funeral. Do we think that was Clair, Jin, Locke? I don't think that Aaron was considered one of the Oceanic 6.

I just read a Korean story in 3rd grade that said that it's customary to put child's name on and birthdates on a gravesite. Could it be his dad's head stone? With his dad's date?

How did Ben get Walt again? Didn't they leave together? Is Walt on the boat?

I just had a sudden flash of possibility: the last of the Oceanic 6 could be WALT!!! I don’t know why I never considered him before. Maybe because he weirds me out a bit with “specialness.” Perhaps Michael somehow got him back to civilization and then recruited himself for mop-man on the freighter. Meanwhile, Walt is still connected to the island in a way that he can just appear to others. As I said before, I feel like he is a messenger for Jacob. If he did make it back to LA, he’ll be rich since Hurley owes him all that money from backgammon. If we’re going to quote sawyer though, Locke saw a “taller-ghost walt” – I just think that sounds funny.

Captain vs. Ben
I’m putting my trust in Ben – that’s right, the guy you can’t trust! I see Ben looking out for the true interests of the island. Though his methods are over-the-top sometimes, many of them can be justified to an extent. He does do a lot of self-serving acts as well, but as a whole, he is protecting the island. And my thoughts are that we will understand how much MORE important the island is than we think. So I’m calling it now – Ben is a good guy (good-ish guy).
